TV wall mounts range from a basic fixed type that offers zero adjustments or movement, to fully adjustable mounts that offer movement in every direction.  Below are some of the more common TV wall mounts along with a brief description of each.

Fixed TV Wall Mount

A fixed TV wall mount is a bracket that simply provides a method to hang your TV on the wall.  These mounts do not swivel, extend, or tilt.  They were the “original” TV wall mount system when flat screens began to replace box TV technology.  While a fixed TV wall mount is the most economical choice, their lack of functionality along with advancements in other mounting types has led to a decrease in their popularity.

While fixed mounts were once were the best option to mount your TV as close to the wall as possible, newer versions of other styles now also provide for mounting almost directly against the wall.  Another downside of these mounts is the lack of access to various cable ports behind the TV.  It can be very difficult to access the various cable ports behind modern TVs with these mounts.

Tilt TV Mount

A tilting TV mount is similar to a fixed mount, the difference being addition of a 5-15 degree tilt adjustment. The tilt adjustment allows for optimizing your viewing angle and reducing unwanted reflections from windows and lights. The tilting action also allows for easier access to the back of your TV and the various media ports. Many tilt TV mounts also offer the ability to slide the TV form side to side along the wall.  Although these mounts are an upgrade from the fixed mount, they do not offer any articulation or ability to pull the TV away from the wall.

Articulating TV MountArticulating TV Wall Mount

The articulating or full motion TV mount adds the ability to pull your TV away from the wall.  Many also include the ability to swivel your TV to ensure it is level.  The articulating mount allows for the greatest amount of flexibility and adjustments to viewing angles.  The ability to pull your TV away from the wall also allows for easy access to media or power ports in the back of your TV.

While these mounts were once large and bulky, newer models will allow for the TV to be pushed back relatively close to the wall if required. A downside of the articulating TV mount is the increase in parts loosening or failing. Although this can cause your Tv to begin to sag or require constant adjustments, purchasing a quality product typically alleviates these problems.

Ceiling TV Mount

A ceiling mount is more of a specialty mount used in specific circumstances such as above a brick fireplace.  While mounts can be secured to brick or concrete, anchorage holes drilled in brick can never fully be repaired to their original condition.  Ceiling mounts come in a variety of styles, from a basic pole extending down from your ceiling offering limited TV adjustments, to motorized mounts that allow for your TV to be tucked tight against the ceiling and extended down for viewing.  Ceiling mounts are also ideal for mounting over an island or other area that a wall mount will not allow for an optimal viewing angle.
